A TUG ASSOCIATION.
The tug-owners of Chicago held another secret meeting last night in the office of Captain Ira Owen, Pardee Building. The object of these meetings is the formation of a general association of all the tugs in the harbor, or of all except the V. O. T. Line, the latter to run its own affairs, but act with the association. The mountain is in labor. What it will bring forth remains to be seen.
TUG-OWNERS ORGANIZED.
A Secret Meeting Yesterday Morning.
A meeting of the tug-owners of Chicago was held yesterday morning in the office of Ira Owen, in Pardee Buiding, Wells and Water streets. The meeting was held in the morning, because, as one of the gentlemen said, “the reporters are not about so early, and they will hear nothing of the matter.” It was intended to assemble at 9 o’clock, but Captain Higgie, of the V. O. T. Line, did not make his appearance until 10, and the gentlemen waited for him. Those present were Higgle, Crawford, Dunham, Harmon, Van Dalson, Hank Blue, and others. All the tug-owners of the port were represented.
The contest over the bridge ordinance, the attempt to force the tugs to put on costly smoke-burners and other questions was discussed, and it was agreed to organize “The Chicago Tugmen’s Protective Association,” which was done. Constitution and by-laws were adopted and officers selected. The officers are as follows:
- President Captain J. L Higgie.
Treasurer James S. Dunham.
Secretary-William Harmon.
All the other gentlemen, as well as the above, are members of the Board of Directors.
Regular meeting dnys were fixed upon and all details arranged.

It came out yesterday that Chicago tug owners are to have two new lines of competition this season. The dredging companies have formed & sort of pool and will do general towing with their boate when the latter are not busy with the dredges and scows. The office will be in Crane’s rooms in Pardee building, and Captain Mike Driscoll is to be superintendent, Young Frank Crane will be collector.
The boats are as follows:
- Chicago Dredging Company-The Alpha, Crane, and A. S. Allen.
O. B. Green Dredging Company-The Alert and O. B. Green.
Harry Fox Dredging Company-The Monitor and Hattie Fox.
The second new line is Captain Gilman’s. The office is in the basement of Pardee’s building, where McLanglin’s restaurant used to be. Captain Si Sinclair is superintendent. The boats are the John Gordon, Commodore, Paddy Murphy, Miner, Wilson Brothers, one not named, and the D. L. Babcock. Captain David Dall, the vessel owner, will occupy the office jointly with Captain Gilman.
