Bailey’s City Directory
BAILEY’S ANNUAL CITY DIRECTORY, VOL. 10, FOR 1867-8.
Having published the best City Directory, as is now universally admitted, notwithstanding the pretensions and high-flown statements of an unscrupulous opposition, I respectfully announce to the Business Men of Chicago. That my canvassers will to day proceed to obtain the needful information for publishing My New Directory, Which will be issued as early as possible, compatible with accuracy and utility.
I admit the sentiment of the opposition, who, with becoming modesty, says “The people of Chicago have been bothered by rival Directories and their Agents for the past four years,” and yet cooly proposes to continue the “botheration,” so unnecessary, considering that the regular publication of ” BAILEY’S DIRECTORY” is by far the best book in accuracy, quantity of information, and binding, and also contains a Map of our City.
The Public Bodies of Chicago have already given me their orders for the City Directory for the present year, (thus making it the Official Book of the City,) as they have done on all former years, namely The Comptroller of the City, the Postmaster, Custom House, City and County Officers, Chamber of Commerce, Boards of Trade, Public Works and Police; Hotels, Express Offices, Fast Freight Offices, every Railroad Company in this city, and nearly 1000 of our principal business and professional men, and this before the first of May, when the number of books ordered will be greatly Increased as usual on the canvass for names.
ADVERTISERS
May rely upon the fact that my Directory presents the only official and useful medium as a Directory to reach the thousands of persons who consult its pages.
During the past year my Directory has been extensively distributed in many of our Western cities—St. Louis, Springfield, Jacksonville, Aurora, Elgin, Fort Wayne, and at Hotels in many other places, which will be greatly increased this year by a special edition of our leading wholesale and retail houses preparing for that purpose.
CAUTION.
Last year many of my books were stolen, under the pretense of borrowing, and leaving Blue Books in their place. Every purchaser of my book this year, will please write his name on the inside of the cover to prevent its being stolen. I have a superior class of young men to canvass, and trust they will receive the courteous consideration of every person who desires to have a good and perfect Directory of Ohicago.

The New City Directory.
The patrons of two rival City Directories, published for some years in this city, one by Mr. Richard Edwards, and the other by J. C. W. Bailey, received, a short time since, a printed circular announcing the consolidation of the publications, under the name of “Bailey & Edwards’ Union Directory.” This is a consummation which will be redound to the benefit of our business men, as the resources of both publishers combined will be devoted toward making the new work far superior to any ever issued in this or any other city. The canvass commenced to-day with a corps of men well schooled and drilled, and thoroughly competent to the task before them. They are provided with books and official authority by the publishers of the Directory, to canvass the districts allotted them, and all others not so authorized are imposters. Our business men have, in many instances, heretofore been swindled by unprincipled men, acting without authority, and they should therefore be on their guard. The canvassers this year are not allowed in any instance to collect moneys in advance for books, advertising, or otherwise. Let patrons make a note of this. The directory this year will be of vastly more importance than any ever yet issued, for the simple reason that there has been a large addition to our population, and the removals of the present month are far in excess of any other year. The directory this year will be a valuable advertising medium, as by the consolidation of the two rivals a large number of copies will be circulated. It will prove a valuable work, a credit to the city and the publishers.
