THE ILLINOIS SCHOOL OF TRADE.—The improvements insugurated at this institution during the last year are making the school more and more popular among us as a place of instruction. Many parents who prefer sending their children to private schools, are glad to avail themselves of the meane of eduestion offered in the Preparatory and High School departments rather than send them fron home at euch an early age. In this we think the patrons of Mr. Dyhrenfurth show their good sense, since they secure for their boys either a bustness or classical course of study, beside the additional advantage of having them at home except during school hours. About six hundred have already connected themselves with the school, and young men are daily going forth from the business department to pisces of important trust.

Pure California Wine.
We have recently tested a sample of California Wine from the extensive vineyards of B. D. Wilson, Los Angelos, branded “Angelica,” which we have no hesitancy in pronouncing fully equal in fine quality and delicate flavor, to any foreign wine that we have ever tasted. Not only does California take precedence of every other part of the world in the richness of its precious, mineral deposits, but it is also few years to rank as the first grape growing and wine manufacturing district in the world. The last ten years has developed the fact that the grape attains a larger growth and better development in California than even in the South of France, heretofore considered the model vineyard of the world. Post & Badeau, 192 Lake street, Chicago, are the wholesale agent for the wines of B. D. Wilson and also of Mesers. Hobbs, Gilmore & Co, San Francisco, the favorite vinters of California. We commend these wines. to the public, as the best that can be procured in the United States or elsewhere.

ILLINOIS SCHOOL OF TRADE. —The winter session of this institution commences to-day, in the building northwest corner of Lake and Wells street. The corps of teachers has been much enlarged, and new subjects of study added. The course of instruction is now surpassed by none in completeness and thoroughness. Parties wishing themselves or
sons to oblain the full fitness for business or University acquired here should apply to the Principal, J. Dyrenturib, Esq. Returned soldiers are taught at half the usual rates.

LAKE AND WELLS STREET.-This view is of an ordinary scene at the crossing of Wells and Lake Streets. In the distance, looking north, may be seen the Wells Street bridge. This portion of Wells street was paved with the Nicholson block pavement in 1855-6, the first of that kind of pavement laid in Chicago, and is yet in a good state of preservation. Mears and Rockwood’s wholesale drug and paint establishment is in the building on the north-west corner. The patent “spring bed” factory is in the same building. This is one of the busiest street crossings in Chicago.

Wood’s Museum. The Educational Department is still continued at the old rooms, 192 Lake street.

ELASTIC SPONGE MATTRESSES.
Probably the greatest attraction in the manufacturers’ department is the elastic sponge mattresses, exhibited by Mr. E. W. Banker, one of the directors of the Western Elastic Sponge Company, 192 and 194 Lake street, Chicago. He exhibits a sponge mattress, sponge bolster, sponge pillow, sponge chair and church cushion. All travelers know how many poor beds of worn feathers, packed and bunched grass, and pressed and set hair, are in our hotels and boarding houses, and when a good bed is found by the weary traveler or the tired business man, it is appreciated as a luxury not so often enjoyed.
We have enjoyed the luxury of an elastic sponge bed at the Rasdall House, the only hotel in Madison yet using them, and we can say they are “soft as downy pillows are, and the most pleasant our weary limbs ever reclined upon. Those who have used them two years, say they are as soft and spongy as when first bought, and they desire no other bed. The company are manufacturing and selling an immense number.
