OUR HOME INDUSTRIES.—THE HOME SEWING MACHINE CO. AND ITS NEW QUARTERS.
It is agreeable to see our local industries prospering and multiplying, especially those which conduce to the saving of labor, like the sewing machine. We therefore present, on this page, illustrations of both the interior and exterior of the building, 157 State street, occupied by the Home Sewing Machine Co., which our artist has carefully sketched for the information of our readers, especially the ladies, to whose household this little multum in paro brings so much pleasure and comfort all over the land.
Within the last six months the Home Sewing Machine Company have placed upon the market one of the best—if not the very best—machine in the world, and it has won a remarkable and lasting success. They are desirous of establishing agencies, in every county, city and town in the United States, a tact which our subscribers will do well to nake a note of. Especially will sewing machine dealers find it to their interest to correspond with the company, represented in this city by Messrs. Johnson, Clark & Co.
The building occupied for the large business of this establishment has, of course, been erected since the fire, and presents a handsome appearance on the street. The engraving shows the interior of the main sales-room, which is very elegant, comfortable and commodious in its various appointments.
The manufactory of the “Home” is located at Orange, Mass. For perfection of mechanism it is unequalled. For hemming, felling, binding, cording, braiding, seaming, quilting, tucking, fringing, rutiling, hem stitching and gathering, the machine has no competitor. It uses a straight needle, makes the “lock stitch” has a self-adjusting tension, and, in fact, is adapted to every variety of sewing for family wear, from the lightest muslins to the heaviest cloths, and its strength is so great that it will even sew leather. It is especially adapted to the wants of tailors, dress makers, seamstresses, manufacturers of clothing, sheets, skirts, corsets, ladies’ boots, etc. All the working parts are hardened, or made of the best quality of steel. Each machine is furnished with all the necessary requisites.
Thus do we see our home industries growing up and placing Chicago again on the proud footing she had before the fire of October 9th. Such institutiens as this help our trade, extend our fame abroad, and place is on a solid and substantial basis as a city.
