HATS, CAPS, AND FURS.
The new white front store No. 134 Lake built by Measrs. Davisson & MoCalla, is completed, and is now occupied by Calvert Barstow—being leased by them at a rent $1800 per year. The French architecture of the building, the variety and beauty of its design makes it the most attractive structure now completed on Lake street. The entire length of the building is 90 feet, and it is five stories high—each successive story presenting a new form of ornate moulding and finish.

The enterprising firm who occupy the store are men whose business ability has placed them in the front rank among Chicago merchants.—They transact a wholesale aa well as retail business, and devote particular attention to manufacturing in all its branches. The best recommendation to their work we can give is the fact that among the contributions of Hats and Caps at the Mechanic’s Fair, just closed in this city, those of their manufacture were awarded a gold medal—the highest gift bestowed by the Society. Their Furs and Robes also were complimented by a First Diploma.

Their third story is devoted exclusively to wholesale trade in Hats, Caps, and Furs; the fourth story is wholly occupied for the manufacturing of Hats and Caps, giving employment to a large number of persons of both sexes. Their establishment for the manufacturing Furs, is located on Sherman street, where some 25 hands are employed, making Robes, Overcoats, and Cuffs. All qualities of Furs brought to this city for sale, are brought are there manufactured into articles for comfort worn in the Winter. Those of our friends who are in want of anything contained in such an establishment can procure those of the best quality at Calvert & Barstow’s, 134 Lake street.

Messrs. Carnes & Wilson, gentlemen of large capital and unlimited business facilities, have recently opened an extensive Book Store at 165 Lake street. They are agents for Harper & Bro.’s publications, and intend doing much in the publishing line themselves. With an excellent location, and a choice stock of care. fully selected works, they will at once attract a large share of the patronage of our city and the west.

THE TRANS-MISSISSIPPI REGION.
We have received from George F. Cram, who has opened a new map store at 134 Lake Street, a handsomely mounted map of the entire Trans-Mississippi region, exhibiting the result of the latest surveys in all the States and Territories between the Mississippi and Pacific. A comparison of this work with a standard map, published only three years ago, shows what astonishing advance has been made in knowledge of the topography of our far western Territories, and, noticing the corrected data outlined on the chart before us, one can readily realize how little there will be, three years hence, that is unknown and unexplored of our magnificent possessions between California and the Missouri.
