DISASTROUS CONFLAGRATION!
Loss $100,000.
One of the most disastrous fires lately occurring in Chicago, broke out yesterday morning about five o’clock, in the basement of the five story brick building, Nos. 52 and 54 Franklin street, occupied by Messrs. O. F. Fuller Co., wholesale druggists, dealers in painta, oils, etc. The flames had made alarming headway when first discovered, the whole interlor of the block being in a blaze. As no fires had been kindled in the building for some time, excepting in the back office—and that remote from the place where the conflagration originated,—it is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. The highly inflammable pature of the stock rendered all efforts to save the goods of no avail.
The steamers and department were early on the ground, but a terrific explosion which soon occurred prevented them from doing more than to keep the flames from spreading. The force of this explosion may be arrived when we state that the entire block, five stories in height, built substantially of brick and stone, and occupying a space of fifty feet front by eighty in depth, was lifted from its foundations and brought down in one mass of shapeless rubbish, and that before the flames had ascended to the third story.
The loss of Mesers. Fuller & Co., is estimated to be from eighty-five to ninety thousand dollars on stock, not to mention valuable furniture and fixtures. Insured to the amount forty-five thousand dollars in different companies.
The brick building was owned by T. H. Barclay, cost eighteen thousand dollars, and was insured for ten thousand.
Although the.spread of the flames was prevented by the continued efforts of the engines, the falling of the walls of the large building crushed those on either side. That on the north, No. 50, was owned and occupied by Jacob Strahl, a furniture dealer. He loses twenty-five hundred dollars. No insurance.
The southwestern portion of Messrs. Shipley & Co.’s building, No. 48, used as a livery stable, was crushed and damaged to the extent five hundred dollars.
No. 56, an unoccupied frame building, formerly a saloon, was entirely demolished. It was separated from No. 54 by a narrow alley leading to the rear of the Everett House.
The rear of the building, No. 225 Randolph street, was damaged some two hundred dollars; owned by Mr. Bradbury, of New York, and occupied as a clothing store by J. H. Henoch, whose stock was somewhat wet.
The Everett, late New York, House, until lately unoccupied, had been on Monday leased by Mr. E. Alexander for a boarding house. The rear walls of the kitchen and dining rooms were crushed in by the falling of the building on Franklin street, some of the furniture spoiled and the rest badly injured by water. Loss to Mr. Alexander, about $300, no insurance, on building, owned by Philip Wadsworth, about $1,000. The valuable barn attached to the Everett House was also considerably damaged.
Never was the efficiency of our paid department and steam fire engines more satisfactorily demonstrated than on yesterday, when, from five o’clock A. M. until ten o’clock P. M., water was kept upon the burning mass, and in the afternoon during the prevalence of a driving snow storm, against which blood and muscle must have been defeated, and the neighboring property destroyed.
