I have been researching the Horatio Gardens subdivision where I have lived near the southern border of Lake County since 1977. The nearest major intersection is Lake Cook Rd and Rte 83 AKA McHenry Rd. I discovered some notable and some notorious people who lived or visited here in Horatio Gardens. I discovered that the subdivision was subdivided by Consiglia (Bergamo) Bartolomei (1861-1952), widow of Francesco ‘Frank’ Bartolomei (1849-1898) in 1927. It is about 125 acres and has around 360 lots.
Local urban legends suggest that the Capone gang may have slept here. There are/were several pre-WWII homes here. Consiglia Bartolomei died here in 1952. Frank and Consiglia had a daughter named Marie Rosaria Bartolomei (1897- 1985) who married attorney and chicago saloon owner Nicholas Alfonso Pope in 1917. They had two daughters, Clarissa Rosaria Pope (1920-2002) and Carmelita Pope (1924-2019). Clarissa played in some TV soaps and sitcoms in her later life. Carmelita dated a young Marlon Brando and helped him become interested in acting. She later became a Broadway lead, replacing Kim Hunter in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire.’ She played opposite Ralph Meeker, who replaced Marlon Brando.
Carmelita was a Chicago TV regular, doing commercials and bits on various live TV shows. She was best remembered for doing Pam Cooking Spray commercials nationally.
Clarissa married James Vincent Mancuso (1916-2001) second generation of the New York/Chicago Automotive Dealer dynasty.
I had relegated the local Capone rumors to urban legend until my neighbor, a Mr Johnson, found human skeletal remains in an old stone ‘pizza oven’ on his property that he was demolishing. Later, construction crews that were adding a second track for the METRA North Central Line nearby found several sets of human remains buried in the old rail embankment. The streets here appear to be named after various members of the Pope family, including Pope Blvd, Clarice Ave, Marie Ave, Carmen Ave, Frank Ave, etc.
