The Age of Printing is giving way to the Age of the Internet at a downtown loft building.
The 100,000-square-foot structure at the northeast corner of Harrison and Clark Streets was built in 1922 to house a printing company. Now it is being converted to 62 loft condominiums priced from $139,000 to $550,000, and all the units will be wired for a cutting-edge amenity access to the Internet via a highspeed T-l line.
“We wanted to create the most technologically advanced environment for buyers,” said David Crawford, who, along with David Kleiman, head D2 Realty Services, the developer of the project.
Originally known as the Thome (sic) Building, the 10-story structure features steel-and-concrete construction designed to handle the heavy loads of the printing machinery of the time and a brick-and-limestone exterior.
D2 Realty Services plans to add four additional floors. There will be 49 residences on floors 3 to 10, and 13 penthouse units on floors 11 to 14. The new floors will be terraced back from the original building.
The first floor will have 5,000 square feet of retail space, as well as the lobby and mailroom.
The basement and second floor will house heated parking. A 2,000-square-foot health club will be constructed on the third floor for the use of the homeowners.
Two decorated models are scheduled to open on May 31. The first residences are expected to be completed as early as November.
As the conversion progresses, only the building’s shell and floors will remain. The balance of the project will be new construction.
All of the one-, two-, or three-bedroom units will have a private balcony. Other standard features will include granite countertops in the kitchen, whirlpool tub, washer and dryer, as well as the wiring for the T-l line, which will offer access to the Internet at speeds normally used by businesses and universities.
