TWO GOLDEN WEDDINGS IN ONE.
Anniversary of a Double Marriage in 1850 Celebrated by Wheeler Families- Are Cousins.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Wheeler, 2125 Prairie avenue, celebrated their golden wedding last evening. It was also the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Wheeler of Syracuse, N. Y., who received with them.
Both weddings took place in Syracuse, N. Y., on Oct. 10, 1850. Mrs. C. Wheeler’s maiden name was Miss Samantha Wheeler and Mrs. N. C. Wheeler’s maiden name Miss Marie Holbrook.
Both the Mr. Wheelers were engaged in the packet business from the opening of the Illinois-Michigan Canal in 1840, entering the employ of the railway companies later, Mr. C. H. Wheeler taking out the first passenger train on the Illinois Central in 1852, the road being only completed to Kankakee.
Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Wheeler removed again to Syracuse a few years ago, returning to Chicago on Tuesday to celebrate the anniversary with their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Wheeler have no children. Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Wheeler have two children in Chicago, Mrs. Lawrence Williams and Mr. Nathan M. Wheeler. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Wheeler’s first home in Chicago was the site of Rothschild Bros.’ present store in State street. They moved to the Prairie avenue house thirty-four years ago.
Among the guests were many of the older members of the First Presbyterian Church, with which Mrs. C. H. Wheeler has been identified for nearly fifty years..
