ARMOUR MANSION ON PRAIRIE AVE. ORDERED RAZED
Abandoned by the meat packing family for 16 years, the Philip D. Armour mansion at 2115 Prairie avenue will be razed and replaced by a parking lot, it was announced yesterday. The building was ordered torn down to save taxes and make the property desirable for sale. In the nineties Prairie avenue was one of Chicago’s best addresses, and the 19-room stone home built by the founder of the packing house was a center of social activity.
Mr. Armour died in 1901. His widow continued to live in the Victorian mansion until 1921 when encroaching business houses caused her to move. She turned the house, rent free, over to her chauffeur who, with his family, occupied it until after her death in 1927. It was next turned into a rooming house but lately it has stood vacant.
