E. Walter Herrick, a well known business man and member of several clubs, died suddenly yesterday at his home, 2018 Prairie ave. He was discovered in an unconscious condition by his two sisters at 10 o’clock in the morning. Dr. Rufus W. Bishop was summoned. but death ensued before his arrival.b Dr. Bishop said death was caused by heart-disease.
Mrs. Lavina A. Herrick, the mother, has not been apprised of her son’s death. She is 80 years old and feeble and it is feared the shock would affect her. She has been told that he is seriously ill.
At Club Night Before Death.
Mr. Herrick the night before his death attended an entertainment at the Calumet club, of which he was a member, and remained there, chatting with his friends until after midnight. health. He was apparently in good
He did not complain of illness when he arrived at his home. He had been subject to heart seizures, however, and frequently said that he would die in one of them.
The funeral will probably be held tomorrow or Wednesday.
Mr. Herrick was unmarried and resided with his mother and sisters. He was born in Chicago forty-two years ago, his father, Elijah W. Herrick, being a pioneer and a man of wealth in the early history of Chicago. The elder Herrick was a publisher of law books, E. B. Myers, a cousin, now conducting the business that he organized.
Walter Herrick was educated in the Chicago schools and at Lake Forest. After his father’s death he traveled extensively abroad with his mother, and finished his education in foreign universities,, spending several years in Europe.
Long in Real Estate Business.
On returning to Chicago he engaged in the real estate business and continued it until five years ago, when he entered the insurance firm of Fred S. James & Co., 171 La Salle street. He was a partner in the firm at the time of his death.
Mr. Herrick was a member of the Chicago club, the Chicago Athletic association, and the Washington Park club, as well as of the Calumet club. He was devoted to golf and other out of door games and fond of travel Yesterday was the second anniversary of a shipwreck that he and two other Chicago men suffered near the Bermudas while on a voyage to Cuba.
The surviving sisters are Mrs. Nicholas de Teresa and Miss Agnes Louise Herrick.
