Wellington Hotel II

At the northeast corner of S. Wabash avenue and E. Jackson street, on the site of the present Lyon & Healy building, was six stories and one basement high, on spread foundations. Henry Ives Cobb was the architect. This site was earlier occupied by the old Matteson House II, which was remodeled completely and opened as the Wellington Hotel. Before the great fire of 1871, Matteson House I was at the northwest corner of N. Dearborn and W. Randolph streets.

The second Wellington House was, for many years, under the management of Albert Gage, one of Chicago’s finest hotels. Its clientele was largely made up of those who appreciated an air of refinement and a cuisine that was near to perfection.

The site was also of the Wabash Ice Skating Rink, which was one the first indoor ice skating rinks in the country.
